Tyres – a creative way to re-use an unloved waste product as a high-quality fuel
As part of our focus on creating a better future for the wider community, the Rangiuru Business Park, through our earthworks contractor, JMC, is working with two New Zealand companies to provide a new use for end-of-life tyres found in the Park throughout the earthworks process.
As most of us know, tyres are a difficult product to re-use but the team at Waste Management have devised a processing system using a series of shredders and graders to turn tyres into tyre chips, and in turn, create high-quality Tyre Derived Fuel (TDF).
Golden Bay Cement in Whangarei then take up the mantle of this journey to repurpose old tyres, by using this TDF to help create cement. The TDF is used to offset the use of coal, reducing their CO2 emissions into the environment. Golden Bay Cement have engineered a new combustion chamber to enable a longer burn-time of the TDF, with no residue or black smoke. This final process by Golden Bay Cement turns end-of-life tyres into a new product for consumption while at the same time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes a year.
While the Rangiuru Business Park plays only a small part in this, we are proud to be associated with this kind of sustainability project that aligns strongly with our values and goals.
